Inspiring the Next Generation of PAs

In this episode, host Emma Sellers, MS, welcomes Marc Doobay, DMSc, PA-C, DFAAPA, clinical associate professor and director of didactic education for the University of Iowa PA Program, and Gabbi Bullard of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, to discuss their work through the PAEA PA Student Success Competition. Marc shares how outreach programs like PATH can help introduce young students to healthcare careers while building a sense of visibility, access and belonging, particularly for those who may not otherwise see those careers as attainable. Gabbi discusses her experience helping coordinate a large team of student volunteers and how building on resources created by previous classes helped make the program sustainable. Together, they describe bringing PA students into Iowa City elementary classrooms for hands-on lessons about the heart and brain while introducing children to the PA profession. The conversation also explores the importance of starting with community needs, empowering students to lead and creating programs that can continue long after their original organizers have moved on.
